Small Habits Making Big Changes To Personal Success by Montez - February 2026 Scholarship Essay
Each night before bed, I sit in silence for a few minutes and write down three priorities for the next day. The list is never long. The information can fit on a small sticky note that I can carry in my backpack. This simple routine helps to guide my academic discipline and strengthen my sense of direction. What began as a way to manage my busy schedule has become the foundation of my success.
I first developed the habit of jotting down my priorities as a way to balance my chores, schoolwork, and athletics. Living in a one-parent household has required maturity and accountability. I had to learn early that if I did not plan my time carefully, something important might get overlooked. Writing down three priorities forces me to set a goal and focus. It prevents me from becoming overwhelmed by all the things I must do in a day and centers on which tasks need to be completed. Whether it is preparing for an exam or doing my daily chores at home, I approach each task with intention.
This habit has also helped me grow as a leader. During my time working as a youth leader at Jelleff Recreation Center, I discovered that leadership is about presence and consistency. Children look for stability. Teammates rely on preparation. Making sure each shift begins with supplies laid out before the children arrive and activities are planned with clear instructions is a priority. When conflicts begin to surface, they are addressed calmly before they escalate. Parents receive updates without having to ask. Over time, consistency builds trust, and trust allows the program to run smoothly.
Outside of the classroom, this habit has reshaped my understanding of success. Each day, one priority will be personal and intentional. Some afternoons are reserved for sitting beside my grandmother, listening to her stories, and valuing the time we have as she courageously battles breast cancer. On other days, I dedicate my time to researching entrepreneurship to prepare for my vision of one day building a company that serves my community.
Writing three priorities takes less than five minutes. This habit shapes and directs the rest of my day. In a life filled with responsibility, this small note keeps me focused and accountable. Each completed task is a promise kept to myself. A small task that began as a simple routine now reflects the discipline and purpose that guide my future.
