Success by Monroe - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The word to describe why I am attending college is "success". Not solely my own, but the world’s instead. Advancements in medicine, science, space exploration, and everything that separates us from the rest of the world, the things that make us human, are a success. My want has always been to further these advancements and nurture an environment where anything that makes us healthier and happier is pursued. To me, success means that you are happy. Money and materials may make one happy. Maybe it’s family and friends. For many, it’s a little bit of both. But when I think of success, I think of happiness.
I am driven by the future. My future, my family’s, friend’s, community’s, humanity’s future. I am a part of everything, I know I can make a difference. Self-doubt seems to be plaguing my generation, but I want to encourage. Encourage good, clean, hard work that makes the end result that much more gratifying when you make a breakthrough. When someone has a vision of success, they will work harder. I believe that a successful vision for people shouldn’t be lavish houses with more cars than anyone needs; it should be world health and vitality.
I am pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing at the University of Portland, where I’ve been accepted, because I want to hone my abilities to care for my community, wherever that may be. I believe that success of one person, especially in a field that is built on the goal of helping others, is the success of others, too. I am pushed forward by the want to acquire more knowledge. I plan to use the skills and knowledge I gain to better help and understand the people around me. I want to be able to offer emergency care, a calm and strong environment, and the feeling of being able to rely on your care providers. I feel that it is important that the healthcare system provide them with services that are as stress-free as possible. My education will give me the knowledge I need to help everyone in the best way I can. I will be a Registered Nurse.
My generation has seen history made. We saw the Great Recession, the first African American president of the US, and technology go beyond imagination in less than a decade. Many say that we are entitled. I tend to agree. We are entitled because we can see what we can do, the limits we can push, and the boundaries we can break. I want the success of people I know, my own success, too, to vitalize the idea that we can move forward. Problems are on the horizon; climate change, political consequences, and limited resources. But I believe that the success we pursue will move us towards clean and effective solutions.
I’m attending college because I want success for everyone. My success will be helping care for others. That is when I am the happiest.
