Beyond the Numbers: A Passion for Finance by Monica - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
Growing up in a household of software engineers, I was always surrounded by discussions about technology and innovation. However, what resonated most with me was my father’s focus on financial security. He grew up in a financially unstable environment, but despite his success today, he continues to support his family back home in India. His journey and the lessons he taught me about managing money and investing have deeply influenced my decision to pursue finance.
From a young age, my father emphasized the importance of financial literacy. He often shared his experiences with investments and money management, teaching me to view finances not just as numbers, but as powerful tools for security and opportunity. These early lessons laid the groundwork for my interest in finance. As I grew older, I realized that numbers tell stories, and I’ve learned to make them speak—decoding the narratives behind the figures and understanding their broader impact.
What excites me most about finance is its ability to influence the future. Finance is not just about numbers; it's about using those numbers to create opportunities, drive growth, and ensure stability. I am particularly drawn to investment banking because it provides the chance to make high-impact decisions that shape businesses and economies. I am motivated by the challenge of analyzing complex financial data, identifying trends, and helping companies secure the resources they need to succeed.
In addition to the technical aspects of finance, I’m passionate about how it can be used to empower individuals and communities. Growing up, I saw firsthand the importance of financial security. My father’s ability to support his family, despite his challenges, demonstrated how financial stability can transform lives. I want to help others achieve that same sense of security, whether through corporate finance, investment banking, or advising individuals on financial planning.
My goal is to use the knowledge and skills I gain from studying finance to create meaningful change. I want to help businesses grow, people secure their financial futures, and communities thrive. By pursuing a degree in finance, I aim to develop the expertise needed to navigate the complexities of the financial world and make informed decisions that will have a lasting impact.
In conclusion, my decision to major in finance is rooted in a desire to empower others and create financial security. Through the lessons I’ve learned from my father, I’ve come to understand that finance is more than just a career—it’s a way to make a difference. I’m eager to explore the field further, particularly in investment banking, and use my education to contribute positively to the financial world.
