Why Mechanical Engineering? by Monica - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

My decision to go into Mechanical Engineering was inspired by my interest in how individual parts work together as a whole. In elementary school, I would take toy cars apart and try to rebuild them. While a majority of the time the toy car would stop working it was still cool to see the inside gears and how they fit. In the middle school, I started taking apart small LED lights and helped my dad out a little while he fixed the car. During that time he taught me some basic physics.

Last year, I took AutoCad class at school. This class introduced me to computerized drawing programs and taught me new technical skills. I was exposed to the world of drafting and I fell in love with the order, purpose, and use of the objects we draft. It felt amazing to draft something that served a purpose. It was also interesting to see how some of the drafts we drew worked and interacted in practice. I loved this class so much that I am taking Mechanical CAD and Engineering Design right now.

In November, I joined the FIRST Robotics Club which teaches me leadership, teamwork and how to communicate effectively with others, while building robot for the competition. Upon my Mechanical CAD teachers’ recommendation, I recently added Skills USA Applied Tech Club, in which I will test my technical drafting skills and have a chance to advance to state competition in April.

Through all of those experiences I developed an interest in Mechanical Engineering. I am inspired to pursue a career that aligns with my interests so that one day I can design, test and build real life machines.

I dream to be awarded with Varsity Tutors scholarship because this would recognize my hard work and achievements and it would give me access to more opportunities in the future. It would also take some stress out of my parents trying to provide for me and my sisters' college education. With your financial help I can envision myself working as mechanical engineer in the near future.
