The course Black and African American Studies should no longer be an elective, but a required class in schools across the country. Just as students are required to take courses in U.S. History, World History, and Government, it is only right that the history and contributions of Black Americans be given equal weight in the education system. This course holds grave importance in the information that it's teaching. Therefore, offering students a clear understanding of all American history. For too long, the contributions, struggles, and resilience of Black Americans have been condensed into slavery and Civil Rights Movement lessons. The lack of recognition fails to recognize the crucial role African Americans have played in shaping American living, from the culture to politics. This course becoming a requirement would ensure that people truly understand and are informed. In addition, taking this course could possibly help combat ignorance, prejudice, and racism within our country. It serves as a wake up call for those that don't understand how broken our system is and all of the systemic issues that have developed over time. Incorporating Black and African American Studies into the required curriculum isn’t just about diversity, it's also about justice and respect. By teaching students about all aspects of history, we were encouraged and empowering them to be the change for a better future. For these reasons, Black and African American Studies should no longer be just an elective, but a required and valued part of every student's education.
