Opportunity and Support by Molly - November 2015 Scholarship Essay

All higher education institutions provide the chance to learn, but only some offer a tight-knit community feel and unique opportunities. My favorite aspect of my education at a small school in central Virginia is the support provided by others and the opportunities that come with that support.
I consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to combine my passions, majoring in both Criminal Justice and German. Along with the classroom requirements, there are endless opportunities for quality internships and for studying abroad. That said, I am most thankful for the supportive environment that encourages its students to take advantage of the educational opportunities that exist.
I am very thankful that I attend a university that actively supports and cares about its students. That care and support extends past the classroom, to the students and surrounding community. While walking to class I’m always greeted by familiar faces. This close knit community is more than just knowing everyone. It is a willingness to help with whatever you need, whether it is with simple directions around town or helping with school work. Not everyone can say that their professor knows them by name and can count on their willingness to help them edit their papers so that they can succeed. Our professors are also quick to suggest and assist us to find study abroad, internships, and scholarships. Specific to me, it was one of my professors that recognized my interest in German and suggested and encouraged me to double major.
I am fortunate to double major in two things I love. As part of my studies, I also have the opportunity to study in Germany. It has been the support of my university community that has empowered me to reach for these opportunities.
