The Real Reason Behind My Passion by Molly - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

I am currently a senior in high school and my plans after I graduate is to pursue the field of psychology. I have already taken many dual enrollment classes that are intended for this major and have helped me get ahead. But what sparked this sudden urge to pursue this field so intently? Why psychology people ask? Usually I tell others that it is because I just have always found an interest in that field, which is partially true, but there is a much greater reason behind my passion and urge to help others who may be experiencing mental health issues.

Well, when I was just a sophomore in high school, my brother (who was only 17 at the time) ran away from home, which was a really strange thing to do, because our life was pretty great. He ended up staying at his girlfriend's house and telling her things that were not true, such as being abused and locked in his room. My family was so confused and hurt, because none of that was actually happening and we didn't have a clue as to why he would tell people that. About a week later, my brother was returned home to us and he started explaining that he left because he was seeing things in our house. After having him evaluated, my brother was then diagnosed with bipolar schizoaffective disorder. This was a really strange and hard time for my family.

After watching my brother deal with everything mental health issues come with, I realized psychology was definitely the field for me. It sparked a passion in me, to help others who may be going through the same thing. I began taking more classes that involved psychology and I started taking this field of study more seriously. Today, I hope to receive a master’s degree in psychology and help those who deal with mental health issues.
