Texas by Molly - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

You probably have never heard of Callie Clayton. She is not a famous person, but she is famous around the Senior High School students at our church. Callie may not teach math, science or literature, but instead, she teaches us how to thrive and succeed in life.

First of all, mere words cannot begin to describe how Callie has “poured herself into” all of our lives. There’s no question about her loyalty. All of us know that no matter what time of day, her door is always open to us when we need her. The most important lesson I learned from her was when one of my good friends committed suicide. She helped us move past our grief. Personally, she taught me that God always has a perfect plan for us. God’s plan is even better than we could plan for ourselves. She reinforced over and over that God would provide for us in our time of need and even when we might get tired of waiting and want to take things into our own hands, God is still there for us. Her optimism and strong belief in God continues to encourage me daily. The second way I have learned from her is by seeing her dedication and level of commitment that she has towards each of us. She goes above and beyond her job description by spending many long hours outside of church with us. For example, the past three years she has met with many girls every Tuesday at six a.m. for breakfast, just to encourage us before our day starts at school.

Callie by far is my “Super Star” of choice. I admire her most for her honesty and humility. She has a big heart and is the most humble person I know. I honestly can say that she imparts a little part of herself into the lives of everyone she meets. My hope is that I will take what she has taught me into the next phase of my life and that one-day I will be able to influence others as she has influenced me.
