Benefits of Studying Abroad
I believe there is benefit to having a requirement for all college students to study abroad. In the melting pot of a world in which we live, it is imperative to have a global understanding of other cultures and environments. So many people are closed minded about others who are different from them, when in reality we are all far more alike than we are different. I feel studying abroad would help college students understand and appreciate diversity.
If college students are exposed to other cultures and mindsets, it will certainly help them see the big picture and realize that their small corner of the world is not everyone's reality. This will help them in college and in life, as they will have first hand experience being immersed in another culture.
I believe this will foster open mindedness and an appreciation for differences versus being apprehensive that others have different backgrounds and values. People with this appreciation will be more likely to become productive, tolerant, inclusive minded citizens, which I believe will make the world a better place for everyone.
When I envision an inclusive minded society I see people who embrace and appreciate diversity. There is so much to learn and appreciate about other people and cultures. Once students graduate and gain employment, it seems likely they will become entrenched in their daily grinds and not have the opportunity to travel/study abroad. College is the perfect time to do this and will help students see the bigger picture about appreciating diversity.
