My Ambitions at the Age of 6 by Misti - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was six I knew that I could draw and wanted to do something that pertained to that. At this age, I wanted nothing more than to be a graphic designer. Being raised to think that the harder you work the better the achievement gets. You feel more accomplished for doing something that was extremely hard, versus if you did something in a day. The easier task is less appreciated because it was something easily attained. Though not a traditional student, the work is going to be well worth my striving for a personal best. As time passed by, I started to change my mind of being a graphic designer to being an art teacher.
My inspiration and mentor came from aunt being an art teacher in Arkansas. With my inspiration in hand, I wanted to be a great art teacher, as the ones before me. One that was looked and respected as one of the best. I wanted a class where I could teach the students to draw. I felt so empowered that I started to freelance my talents by helping people learn how to draw. There was this older couple, in my neighborhood, that believed in me so much that she wanted me to teach her how to draw. I helped her draw different things, but the fondest memory was teaching her how to draw a frog. This idea of being an art teacher went on until I really checked into the education requirements. This is when I changed track yet again. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love the idea of teaching. In fact, the past three years I have been a teacher’s aide and really enjoy seeing all the kids’ faces light up when showing them how to draw. Most want me as a teacher. I have seen them loose something when I tell them I do not have all my credentials to be a teacher. These kids are one of my driving forces to go back to school. I want to show them that everything is attainable with hard work even if it’s not for teaching.
Again, I changed my path but this time it was a combination of doing school, being a graphic designer, and later being a business owner that does everything from brochures to photography. This is more of having a backup plan on top of having a plan for my career. My first and for most, is to be a graphic designer. If that should fail then I have an art teacher to fall back upon as a safety net with a great mentor. This mentor even has some lesson plans to pass down to me. This would be quite an honor as well. First things first, it to get an education.
With furthering my education, I see new possibilities to obtain what I have desperately wanted for so many years. I see it as a long, hard process that has its highs and lows. After attaining my goal of education, it makes it easier to go after my dream. Everyone is looking for a bachelor’s degree and some experience. Through my positions I believe I have the experience employers are looking for, just not the bachelor’s degree. This gives me an option to have both so I am better equipped.
