The Adventures of Ina: How to Break Free by Miriam - June 2014 Scholarship Essay
Summary: Ina always knew there was a vast and unexplored universe beyond the compound, but being able to set out on an expedition was not in her stars. Or so she thought. One regular and slightly boring Monday morning strangers came into town and Ina’s world was turned upside down. The others that shared the compound space were equally as confused but no one was as excited as Ina. “Finally,” she thought, “my chance to discover the sights beyond this world is here.” Of course, situations are not as they seem and Ina may have bitten off more than she could chew. While the strangers were shaking things up, Ina realized something was wrong. The soft, sparkly snow that she had called her home was moving, but not Ina….what was she going to do?
Description: As the summary suggest, Ina is inside a snow globe. My book would follow several snow globe characters as they deal with the realization that they are stuck differently. People have various reactions to the situations that life gives them and I think a humorous tale about how one snow globe tries to deal with her problems is needed. After graduating college I had no clue what I wanted to do. I knew that my degree would bring me many opportunities but I still felt trapped. There were all of these options and I had no clue what to do. While it took me a three years to figure that out and when I decided to go back for my master’s degree I knew that I was breaking through my own personal snow globe. I would like to use Ina’s story to show that there is nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do with your life. The amount of time it takes one person to figure out what they want to do (i.e., career) is different from someone else. This took me a while to figure out and I would like to spread that through the adventures of Ina and her friends.
