Why I want to teach English by Miranda - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed and I were to teach any academic school subject, I would teach English. I feel as though this was the perfect question for myself in the sense that I actually do want to be an English Teacher.
I have always excelled in English class growing up. When I got into high school, I would help my classmates with their work, as I had always finished mine. First, I love helping people understand grammar, stories, and the importance or literature better. Helping people understand ideas in a different way that worked for them made me joyful.
Soon, I realized that if helping these people learn in a way that clicked for them could make me that happy, I knew this meant that I wanted to teach. Being a teacher, in my eyes, is more than just having kids come into a classroom and become zombies while the instructor drones on and on about their taught subject, as I have experienced. Teachers who do this are not actually teaching the kids, they are making school harder and less interesting to the students. Teaching is about helping kids actually become interested and connected with what they are being taught. I'm very passionate about teaching and I can't wait to begin my future doing so.
If I were a teacher, I would change some things about education. I would teach with a more "hands on" approach. Most kids learn by being about to interact and this follows them into adolescence. I would like to teach at a high school level, as this age group can grasp things and handle it in a more mature manner. Showing these students how to read, write, and create their own stories or ideas, and this is very important to me.
Being passionate about something you love but having to wait to begin doing it is very hard, but I can do this if it means getting a quality education. I would like to have my own classroom that students will learn their own minds and creativity in. I believe this scholarship is suited to meets the needs of my future as an English Teacher. I can't wait to change the world, one student at a time.
