Education is My Buffet by Miles - July 2019 Scholarship Essay
Looking at the educational offerings I’ve been exposed to makes me think of a buffet of my favorite foods with a mixing of new dishes. All deliciously spread in front of me, some on large platters and others in smaller bowls or set low to the table. Foods on the buffet table are tempting to me, as are the courses and educational activities I see at my school, in the community and in colleges.
This temptation has become a passion as I’ve quickly chosen academic classes of my interest including biology, environmental science, and physics. These choices represent the dishes staged higher on a buffet. Easy choices for devouring. Also, my interest to increase my skills in a foreign language had been piqued and fulfilled with years of training. I’ve attempted to share my emerging skills similar to a chef, who creates a new recipe for an experienced palate.
As my eyes have moved over a buffet searching for new appealing items, my passion for education has led me to my community through volunteerism at the local library. Smaller portions of education to move me forward in learning from community members. I’ve been exposed to the passions of others through their interests and conversation. I’ve learned the intricate workings of a small community library, and have acquired an understanding of the results of hard work and dedication.
Quite often the edge of the buffet offers sweets and desserts that take a chef’s patients and time to present to the guests. For me, my academic desires to venture into additional activities involving persistence, perseverance and presentation have paid off. My five year efforts of studying words for hours each night led to my successes in regional spelling bees and my participation on the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee as Speller 154. My determination through scouting led me to the highest rank of Eagle Scout in 2018, and my interest in residential wildfire mitigation systems led to two independent scientific research projects and participation in regional competitions. I was rewarded for my efforts with an award each year for innovation and use of materials. I realize I’ve rewarded myself with the urge and desire to question and develop ideas to share with others.
Finally, just as a buffet offers a tease of new delicacies, my passion for education is heightened as I look through college course catalogs and program fields. There are so many that I recognize and have an interest in, and others that I don’t have any familiarity and want to explore more. As I try to keep up with current trends and predictions for the future of our country and the world technology, engineering and society are quickly becoming my passion foods.
