My Academic Goal for the Upcoming Year by Mikenzie - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

Earning an “A” in chemistry is the academic goal I have set for myself this year. Each semester, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte only accepts 52 students into their nursing program. Several factors are considered to get in. Your grade point average is high on the list. The number of volunteer hours runs a close second. I have been working and volunteering all summer so that I can focus on my academics this fall. Earning an “A” in chemistry will boost my confidence and serve as the self-motivation I need to continue to follow my dreams of becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

When I was in the 5th grade, a group of healthcare workers came to visit my class. I will never forget. There was a medical assistant, a scrub technician, a registered nurse, and a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Each of their roles seemed interesting to me, but the one that stood out the most was the certified registered nurse anesthetist. What caught my attention was the emphasis she placed on autonomy and her work environment. I particularly liked hearing how she got to interact one-on-one with her patients. From that moment I knew a career as a certified nurse anesthetist would be a great fit for me. The hours I spent volunteering in the hospital each week this summer helped me to realize just how much.
