Bridging the Gap Between Business and Healthcare by Mikayla - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
From a young age, I have always admired healthcare workers and their undeniable sacrifices. My father, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, worked in the intensive care unit. He would come home everyday after holding his patient’s hands who took their last breaths, unable to hug my siblings and I after continuous emotional strain, day after day, out of fear he had brought home an illness from the hospital. My father’s sacrifices, along with every other healthcare worker, have a tremendous impact on their patients and their families. My desire to go into accounting and business administration stems from an intrinsic urge to have a positive influence in a field that has a profound impact on others lives. My goal is to obtain my Bachelor’s in Accounting, acquire a CPA license, as well as an Associate's in Business Administration, in order to enter a position of medical accounting and business administration in hopes to reconnect the heart of medicine with the business aspect of care.
During my academic career, I enrolled in a Medical Occupations Career Technology Program, and as a result, I have become a Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant. While I can’t begin practicing medicine until I have officially graduated from high school, I continually look forward to the new opportunities that will allow me to provide helpful care for others. I have always had a passion for health sciences, which fueled my desire for a CPCT/A certification. In order to be able to effectively work alongside healthcare professionals and give my future patient’s the care they deserve, I place value in being able to put myself in the shoes of patient’s and healthcare workers, which I feel is often the root of business and healthcare conflict. In addition to my Career Technology program, I have taken a variety of Advanced Placement college classes throughout my high school career, including AP United States History, AP Statistics, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Psychology. While these classes are both academically challenging and demanding, they have allowed me to develop skills that I will continue to utilize during my college education. To further my knowledge in business while still in high school, I have obtained a certification in digital marketing, with hopes to gain experience in business marketing while pursuing higher education. In recent years, the demand for an education congruent with technology usage has become ever-growing. Great importance lies in evolving with any changing field, but especially recognizing the increased demand that has occurred in recent years for technology-based markets.
More than ever before, especially following the pandemic, many healthcare workers have reported a loss of passion for their profession or burnout in many aspects. Providing healthcare workers with the necessary resources to rekindle and maintain their love for medicine is a growing area of need, and I strive to provide the efforts to foster the desired change. Supplying additional help for healthcare workers in hospital settings starts with administration and the business -- both fields meant to support an ever-changing field that forever influences other’s lives.
