I am AVID by Mikayla - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

In my senior year, 2019-2020, I ran and successfully won the title of publicist for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). I had carried this title all the way up from my sophomore year into my senior year, 2018-2020, and have managed to hold this title three years. Sometimes it was a challenge to find the time, space and money I needed to create posters and flyers to help advertise fundraisers and events for AVID. But with some planning and the support of my Nina, I was always able to figure it out and come through for my AVID group. I have been successful in helping the AVID group gain more interest and get new students to notice AVID. For example, I attended an AVID recruitment rally where I posted ten posters that I personally drew and painted in order to fill one of our school’s gyms.
The point was to inspire the incoming freshmen to get ready for college and focus on their bright futures. Also during an AVID mentorship lunch-in, I personally created four fun and inspiring posters to keep the current freshmen excited about the AVID program. I enjoy seeing all the smiles on the students faces when they see my art. It makes me truly happy and in return makes me want to continue to pursue our AVID program as their publicist in my senior year. I love to continue to inspire and spread the word about our AVID program and what it has to offer. All this dedication to the program has really made me understand the importance of grit and time management. The program also gave me the motivation to communicate with my teachers because I was confident that I knew how to do the problems. In my tenth grade year I approached my math teacher and asked for a chance to prove that I could do this math work. She agreed to give me a chance. Every day during lunch time in my second semester I went to her class and she would give me worksheets on the math material she was teaching to see if I truly understood how to solve the problems. Not only was I able to complete the worksheets quickly, I passed all of the questions and got everything right. Because I showed initiative and wanted to make sure my grade was good and put forth the effort to make my grade better, I passed her class with a solid C. That was way better than failing like I was prior to me asking for a chance to prove myself.
