Advanced Psych by Mikayla - March 2014 Scholarship Essay
One of my greatest academic achievements was signing up to take Advanced Placement Psychology online. My school does not offer AP Psych, but we have a connection with a program called Virtual High School (VHS) which enables us to take courses we wouldn’t be able to take otherwise. I had never taken a psychology course before, so taking the leap into AP seemed like it was going to be a lot to handle. Luckily, I had taken a VHS course previously, but they changed the layout and how it works before I signed up. I had taken an AP course before and done well on the exam, but that course was taught by a teacher in my school instead of me just having to basically teach the material to myself. Also, I was already taking two other advanced, college-level courses on top of the Honors courses I was going to take, working part-time, taking my karate courses, and my other extracurricular activities. I knew it was going to be a lot to handle, but I was up for the challenge.
I am so glad I decided to take this course. It was really difficult to juggle all the work with my other work, but I have learned so much. Psychology is the field of study that I will be majoring in during college. I wanted to take this course to give me a head start in my studies because, if I get a good score on the exam in May, I will earn college credit. However, it has done more than that. I have a decent grade in that class right now at an average of around a ninety. But it has also taught me excellent time management. I used to be a huge procrastinator before having to juggle everything, but now I am able to get all my work done and still have time left over to do other things, like relax. I definitely feel like this course, despite how challenging it is for me now, has better prepared me not only to further my studies next year when I head off to college, but also in preparing me to well in life after graduation.
