Giving the World a bit of Magic by Miguelangel - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
Learning can come in a plethora of shapes and sizes, but in my case, it's most beneficial when in the form of media I consume. Upon hearing that, most traditional-minded people would scoff at that very idea due to it not only sounding childish, but also since media is meant to be enjoyable rather than educational, but I beg to differ. Media can affect not only how we view the world around us, but also give us lessons and morals that can stick with us when done right. A primary example I'd like to give is the graphic novel series known as "Hooky" by Míriam Bonastre Tur.
The story follows twin witches Dorian and Daniela as they not only learn magic but slowly change the narrow-minded views that the world has against witches. There is a lot of social commentary on how witches are seen as dangerous and thus should be exterminated by humans, which leads to a huge discourse between witches and humans. However, it is through not only the friends that they made along the way but also their desire to make the world a better place in which they help change the views of humans and witches to show that at the end of the day, we are all just people trying to figure out this crazy game called life, so what's the point in focusing on what makes us different. This graphic novel not only means the world to me but helped reassure me that no matter how tough and cruel the odds may be, there will always be a way for good to triumph. Sure it won't be easy, but if you tackle the trials and tribulations of life with the people you love, it'll be just a bit easier for you. There are things in this life that can be changed for the better, and you have the power to act on that change. All it takes is a drive that burns brighter than any fire.
While yes, this is an incredibly nontraditional way to learn a lesson such as this, it stuck with me even years after I read this series, so I feel that amounts to something.
