Girl Scouts, Making A Difference by Michelle - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
I have been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, and all my life I've been raised to believe that it is our duty as members of a community to give back what we can. Even as I grew up and began to assemble my own opinions, I still found this to be true. Life is a give and take relationship, where as a community sometimes we need to receive help from those around us, and it is our responsibility to give back. Helping others is a gratifying experience, and the sheer knowledge that I just made someone happy or that I made someone's life a little better makes me happy as well. My mother has been volunteering her entire life, and I have seen the affect she has on the lives of those around her. Ever since I was little I have wanted to grow up to be like her, and I can easily say she is one of my biggest role models. She has been encouraging me to be the best person I can possibly be my entire life and I could honestly say that she has instilled such high morals in my head that I will follow for the rest of my life. I find that spending a portion of my life volunteering and giving back to the community has not only made me a well-rounded person, but has also taught me the biggest lessons in kindness and self-worth. Volunteering has made me an all-around happier person, finding that some of the biggest joys in life come from helping others find joy too.
Being raised by an empowering mother and a supportive father has given me the skills that I will carry with me throughout all walks of life. Actively participating in Girl Scouts has taught me that women deserve to be treated as equals to men, and that it is our time to receive what has been horribly withheld from us: rights to equality. It is 2016, and it is about time that our race has begun to accept the fact that we were all created as equals, and we deserve to be treated as such. We have been raising awareness for over 200 years, and it is time for our voices to be truly heard.
In college, I plan to work in medical research labs, and I will continue to voice my opinion on women's rights as I work my way up in ranking within the laboratories that I work in. My hard work and commitment to my work and findings will show those around me that I am a force to be reckoned with, and that females can be in powerful and educated positions and succeed just as much as men. In recent years, there has been an influx of women in these STEM related jobs and areas of expertise, and I hope to play a vital role in expanding this movement.
