Time Management by Michale - December 2017 Scholarship Essay
School projects can be very time consuming for students that already have a big work load. In the past I once put a project off multiple times in the week and waited until the night before it was due to begin the project. The quality of my project was compromised, and I didn’t get an adequate amount of sleep causing me to be late the next day. Procrastination may seem like a promising idea to students when the project is assigned, but it the end it is only setting them up for failure.
Based on my unpleasant experience, I tried one small strategy and it has led to me successful completion of school projects every time. Time management in my opinion is the single most valuable tool a student can utilize to succeed not only on school projects but in all areas of life.
Start by writing an assignment down as soon as it’s due. If a project is assigned on a Monday and due that Friday, you should allot yourself at least one hour each day to commit to your project. Set priorities to make sure you work on your project each day. Try working on your project early in the day to get it out of the way so you can participate in enjoyable hobbies later in the day. Doing this will ensure you don’t set yourself up to procrastinate. If you have a job while in school, try cutting back on your hours when you are assigned with projects that will take a lot of time to complete. Utilizing family and friends to help with errands or child care can also help to alleviate other stressors that might affect working on your project every day. One last tip that I would recommend is to put the due date one day sooner than the actual due date. This ensures that you won’t be running around on the morning that it is due trying to print documents or putting the finishing touches on your project.
Time management skills may take some practicing, but it will make a significant difference in your overall success. In addition to time management, you should make sure you get enough sleep each night and that you have a healthy diet. This will improve your cognitive function and will allow you to focus better. Lastly, make sure you utilize your resources available to you, such as your library staff and teachers.
