Is College the New Normal? by Michaela - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
In the past, college has been a luxury awarded only to those who were wealthy enough to afford it. As the years have gone on, admittance to college was becoming more available to more people. Universities popped up all over America offering a variety of courses in most subjects. Still however, it was not assumed that children would attend a college after high school. As we come to the world we live in today, college is becoming essential, not only for career reasons, but also for the experience.
College is the first time, for most people, that a student is on their own. Their schedule, food choices, even their choice of clothing is completely up to them. This freedom can be a hard adjustment with the student being solely responsible for the academic performance. College is a time where a person learns what it’s like to live independently. This is the first step toward the rest of their life. Besides learning information which will help in a future career, students are also learning how to interact with different types of people, how to schedule school, personal, and social functions, and exploring who they are as an individual. College is all about experiencing what life has to offer.
College is extremely important because it allows students to learn about the world in a safe environment where mistakes are learning tools on the road of adulthood. Every student should have the ability to experience the opportunities that college can offer.
