Using Student Government to Spread Kindness by Michaela - July 2018 Scholarship Essay

Running for student body president causes you to step back and think what is most important. Is it popularity, power, or an opportunity to help your fellow classmates? If I were to run for student body president, I would focus on what the title suggests, the student body. I would want students’ needs and well-being to come first over power. The number one way I would hope to make a positive impact on my school would to make a big campaign on the importance of bullying and mental health. I think that bullying is a rising epidemic in our schools today, and probably always will be. If I was in the position of student body president, I would want to use the position to spread kindness and awareness of mental illness. Kids are constantly hurting and will not speak up when they need help. I would want to create “safe spaces” where kids could talk with others about their struggles.

It is important that students look out for each other. The old phrase, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all” can especially apply to young people. Being in the position of student body president would allow me to use the power to try and get my classmates to be kind to one another. The negativity that young kids face today is cruel and unnecessary. If I had the chance to run for student body president, I would help those who suffer from bullying.
