Leadership Skills Are Necessary for College by Michael - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

I have been taught from a young age not to be lead by others. Being a leader gives a person an insight, a determined drive to stay on focus. Most people entering college are eighteen and leaving home for the first time and being on your own can be challenging. You will need to pick and choose your friends carefully because your parents will not be there to guide you. Being a leader will give you a mature look at the world and people. You know you are going to college to earn a degree, an education. That education is the focal point to having a better life which is getting a good job and hopefully developing your own business. Being my own boss is my ultimate goal in life, the only way I can get that is being a leader.

Being a leader also gives you the tool to making the right choices, and sometimes you may not be able to make the right choice. So as a leader, you know you will need to get the right advice from the right individual. Most the time that right advice comes from the person who has supported you the most and aided in assisting you to have a better life. Basically, that person has real life experiences and has made it through their challenges in life. Some people may not have that parent or grand parent. Some people may get that advice from a coach, teacher or a good family friend. A lot of times when you have leadership skills you may need to be a loner in a sense. Yes, you can socialize and relax, but you need to know your limit. My mother always taught me that too much of anything is not good, so know your limitations. To me being a leader is loving yourself. You are going to college and getting that education for yourself so you can have a better life than your parents and hopefully one day you can give back to your community when you are sucessful. Having leadership skills are not only necessary for college but for your life. You have a vision and a goal. Leaders know how to defuse situations and how to have a better handle on conflicts because leaders think before they act.
