My Goal of Going to College by Michael - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

From the time I was 3 ½ years old, I started playing baseball but my true love of the game began when I was 1 year old, when I got my first bat, ball and batting tee. By the time I turned 9, I started playing club/travel baseball so that I could develop my skills to be the best I could be at playing the game. My dad has always been there to help me in any way he could to reach my goals of playing baseball. When I was younger, he built me a pitching mound in our backyard where I would pitch to him every day. He also bought me an indoor hitting machine where I would swing and hit balls every day. Then, my folks signed me up for private baseball lessons at a local training academy. By the time I was 14, they got me a professional size batting cage and pitching machine for our yard. I am now a senior in high school and have been accepted at a college in Kentucky where I get to continue playing baseball. I have learned that with hard work, anything is possible if you are willing to do the work that is necessary to get the job done.

My name is Michael J. Macon IV (aka Jr.) and I am a senior in high school, in a small town in Northern California. When I graduate, I plan to move to Kentucky to attend a four-year college, Georgetown College of Kentucky, so that I can earn a Bachelor’s degree in business administration as I want to secure a position with a respectable company to develop my knowledge, skills, talents, and to make a difference.

For me, going to college is not just about the academic aspect. It is also about me as an individual to grow, develop and mature as a person. I believe it will also grant me the opportunity to become more independent and responsible for my future career goals. In college, I envision I will develop skills that will be very useful in a future work environment. I also trust that my getting a college education, it will allow me opportunities for higher earnings in the work force, as well as getting a job that also offers benefits such as health and retirement. I want to be able to provide for myself, and my future family

My reasons for wanting to earn a Bachelor’s degree in business administration is so that I can pursue a career with P.G.&E and not because this is a P.G.&E. offered scholarship, it is because I have learned a great deal about the company due to knowing employees of the company. One of them has retired from the company, and the other is a current employee. Both started working for the company on the gas side as union employees and both ended up transferring into office roles. One in particular also moved to the electric side and this is the side of the company that interests me greatly.

Being someone who live in Northern California and knowing employees of the company, I know that the company has been through a lot of downs due to, in my opinion, climate change. With California’s forest floors not being kept cleaned throughout the state, and the utilities power line (for the most part) being above ground on poles and towers. With the weather and wind storms our state has had over the past few years which has caused downed power lines. That in turn sparks fires and when that happens in the forest, it is catastrophic due to unkept forest floors combining with the sparks. The result is loss of life and homes in the State. What I like about P.G.&E. is that they are making changes to help this situation by trying to unground all of their power lines, so as to avoid these types of situations from occurring again. This interests me very much and I would like to bring my college education to the company in hopes to assist with being a part of this big change for the company. Although it will be a few years.

As my college education will be very expensive, but it is my goal to make a difference in one of our utility companies here in California by earning a Bachelor’s degree. I know that working hard to earn such a degree, being of the first generation to go to college in my family for a 4 year degree, motivates me to be successful academically like that of playing baseball all of my life. I have been successful at staying focused for my future education, like that of playing baseball, because I want to be successful in my future career in making a difference.
