Why I Want (Need) to go to College by Michael - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

Speaking as a child who grew as a high school student during the COVID-19 pandemic, I shaped my identity around the absence of stability. I learned to expect the unexpected and although it was endlessly tiring to live a life without structure, it was the new normal. And so here I am today, only just now finding out what is the next step I want to take in life.
Leaving high school with a passion for writing, I was unsure whether I even needed to pursue college in order to obtain the career I wanted. And yet, I found the idea of marketing myself and engaging in entrepreneurship daunting. I may not have needed college to reach my dreams, but I have found that it offers me the stability I need to become the writer I was destined to be.
When asked why I want to go to college, I must respond with why I need to go to college. In order to achieve the life and education I want, college is a necessity in doing so. And although it is a financially daunting commitment, it is one I am willing to take, in hopes that I have a chance at scholarships such as this.
