Describe an academic goal you have for the upcoming year. by Michael - August 2022 Scholarship Essay
Walking into Dalton high school has always brought me great joy and pride. High school has been a time of friendship, socialization, education and personal growth. High academic achievement has always been something that has come easy to me, until my junior year during a very hard quarter of pre-calculus class. Before my pre-calculus class, I never really had to study too hard. In fact, I boasted frequently that I could listen to the teacher during class and fully understand all content. However, that quarter of my junior year, I learned there may be a time when I cannot fully rely on my auditory skills and must learn how to study to understand content.
My goal for this school year is to learn to truly study the material in each of my classes. To do this, I must first learn different study skills. The few study skills I have have never really been put to the test, yet I know that I will need a vast array of study tools to help me be successful while in college. My goal for this year is to research different types of study skills, try them in different classes and determine what skills benefit me in each situation. The purpose of this goal is to ensure that I am as prepared as possible for my college experience.
Having a class that I did not succeed in was a blessing. I learned that not every situation is going to be the same and I cannot rely on the one and only way I have used to prepare for assessments. Despite being disappointed in myself and my final grade that quarter, I am glad to have been put in that situation. Edison once stated, "I didn't fail 1,000 times. I have not failed once. I simply learned 1000 ways to not make a lightbulb." This quote speaks to me in this scenario due to the fact that I have now learned that I need to keep trying new ways to understand what I am learning in school. I am proud of my goal for this school as I know that it will benefit me greatly in all of my future endeavors.
