Lifelong Learner by Michael - July 2019 Scholarship Essay
When I hear the word "education", my initial response is usually to cringe a little. For me, the word "education" associates itself with more humdrum facets such as student loans, homework, and long nights studying. The last 7 years I have had the opportunity to earn a doctorate degree and a bachelor's degree. As you may expect, I experienced that dreaded list I just mentioned during this time. That is the baggage that comes with getting an education. As I have matured, I can now look back on these aspects of education and see them, not as "baggage", but as necessary sacrifice.
Being a lifelong athlete, I am no stranger to sacrifice. I have made the hard decisions of not hanging out with friends, skipping the fast food meal, and even going to bed before the sun goes down. I have always embraced this element of being a high level athlete; it is not fun, but you come out better on the other end. After getting married and earning two degrees, I no longer cringe when I hear the word "education." Instead, I swell with gratitude. Education has crafted me into the successful husband, athlete, and physical therapist that I am today.
Being in the field of healthcare, it is imperative that I continue to learn and stay up to date with the most current research and techniques. In fact, the state licensing boards require continuing education to maintain your license every 2 years. In a field that is dynamic and always advancing, being a lifelong learner is a must. For someone who is passionate about learning and trying new things, this is simply an adventure.
My passions have always been prolific and diverse. This made it hard settling on any one major or career path. This is also part of the reason I am choosing to return to school, yet again. I am blessed to have the ability to work part-time at my current job, return to collegiate athletics, and study computer science. I am doubtful my journey to learn and create will stop at this station. My passion for life keeps me moving and my desire to continue learning is the fuel for the engine. So what is education to me? Education is the tracks that keep my train going. To have a passion for a productive life is to have a passion for education.
