Comprehension by Michael - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

Many students encounter challenging situations in the classroom. Whether it is a vocabulary word that you can not remember, or an equation that you can not solve, there is always a way to better yourself so that you are able to overcome a challenging situation. My challenge was reading and interpreting a book or a passage, and answering the questions given to me about the passage or book correctly. I was able to read but I could not retain the information that I was seeing on paper. To get better at retaining the information, I had to read on my own time and evaluate myself on everything that I read.
To improve my ability to read and comprehend, I had to acquire non-picture books and actually read the books that I received. Instead of going home and playing video games, I would read a couple of chapters out of my books. To improve my comprehension while reading, I would read one paragraph at a time and go back and clarify what I was reading until I understood what was going on in the paragraph. After a few weeks my reading and comprehension improved drastically, and I was receiving better grades on my reading tests in school. Reading more on my free time, made me appreciate reading and the amount of knowledge reading gives you. I started to read much harder books than the usual "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" that I used to read, and I became a smarter and more intellectual person.
My weakness in being able to interpret what I was reading, helped me figure out what I needed to work on. Overall, me overcoming my challenge, helped me improve my intellect and made me more active. I started socializing more with my friends and new people, and it made me smarter. Spending time reading and spending time with my friends and family became my new favorite hobby instead of playing video games all day. My challenge in the classroom ended up opening my mind up to the fact that the world does not revolve around my video game, it is about bettering yourself and the people that you are around.
