La Vida Linda by Michael - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

“La vida es para el que se avispa.” Those words have never left my mind. It was a beautiful day in Colombia as my cousin and I walked down the mountain. He told me about how he had enjoyed working at Pigeon Forge during the summer of his sophomore year. It was an experience he would never forget and was grateful that he had the opportunity to do it. The sad part was that another cousin of ours had the same opportunity but instead of taking it, he spent his summer on his couch at home. All because he wasn’t willing to put in the effort to get the required documents to work in the United States.

The quote my cousin told me emphasizes an opportunistic approach towards life. Life is full of opportunities but it is up to us to take them. We have to get past our fears and drive ourselves into the future. If we don’t, we will miss the chances of our lifetime and regret our lazy approach towards life. I believe in looking life straight in the eye and taking it by the horn.

We are all born equally. It is up to us to create value. The actions we take define us as well as create a reputation for us. We can either fight for our lives or we can let our lives slip away. Life is like a game. Some people in life play to not lose, to get by, but I play to win, to succeed in life. I take the opportunities given to me. I create my own success by contributing to society and creating a better world for us all.
