"Trust Your Gut" by Michael - May 2014 Scholarship Essay

"Trust your gut". That is what a teacher told me when I asked her what advice she could give me for the ISAT. I was really afraid to take the ISAT that year because I was old enough to understand what the test was and what it meant. Ms. Quest, my sixth grade teacher, told me that I have to answer a question and go with my gut. If I go with my gut, I cannot be wrong and trust myself. She told me that if I trust my answer and have confidence, that my answer will be right.

At first, I thought that was inaccurate, but as time passed, it was I who turned out to be wrong. I tried out her theory on the next test we had in class to test her theory. I marked the ones where I did not know the answer for certain and made a reminder of the answer I would have gone with had I changed my answer. I was right most of the time when I trusted my gut. So, just trusting in my gut did not mean I would automatically get the question right, but it did mean that I would become more confident in my answering ability, and that would make me feel confident in myself which is half the battle in my eyes.

Since then, I have trusted my gut more (and myself in general), to which I owe at least half of my success and grades to. If it was not for Ms. Quest and her advice, then I do not know where I would be right now. I can say with certainty that I would not be here. I would not have my 4.2 G.P.A. and my A's and B;s would be C's and D's. What Ms. Quest's advice did for me was more than just help me through the ISAT, through elementary school, through high school, but it is helping me through life. It helps me through life because it taught me to be more confident in yourself and it has stayed with me to this day and will stay with me to the beyond.
