New Jersey by Michael - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I could give one piece of advice to younger students I would encourage them to work as hard as they can. If you work hard and study you will usually get good results. It is important to control what you can control; you can not control test results, but you can control the effort and preparation that you put in. Working hard will also make going to and funding college easier in the future. For example, good test scores and grades in school will lead to scholarships and acceptances. In addition, working hard may involve working after school in order to afford college. I learned this too late and I only started working my senior year and I wish I had began saving money much earlier. It is also important to challenge yourself in high school and take AP and honors classes. As my spanish teacher said, "If it is not difficult it is not worth doing." I firmly believe in this and I think you learn more when you challenge yourself and work hard.
I would also highly recommend that they get involved at their school. I have met so many friends in the sports I have played and the clubs I have been in. Clubs and sports also look great when applying to college, and they also can teach you how to manage your time effectively. Joining certain clubs can also make you feel good if you are helping others or volunteering in your community.
