How I Achieved Academic Success in 2021 by Micah - January 2022 Scholarship Essay

The year 2021 was full of challenges for most children throughout the country. The biggest challenge has been in the area of education. Prior to the pandemic, life was normal for kids that attend school outside of the home with set routines, after school activities and social events with peers such as dances and school team sporting events. However, 2021 put a halt on life as I knew it before. It caused me to have to learn new skills and strengthen old skills that would subsequently contribute to my academic success of 2021. One of the skills I strengthened that contributed to my success was time management.

Success for me in 2021 meant maintaining a grade point average of 3.8 while also taking college courses in a dual enrollment program at the Academy of Health Sciences. Success also meant being able to turn in quality assignments and to learn the material better without having access to an instructor regularly. Time management was very important not because I had little time to do all my assignments but because I suddenly found myself with extra time being at home because schools were closed. Extra time also meant the possibility of idle time that could've been spent on less meaningful activities during regular school hours. I found myself setting a schedule just as if I was attending school in person. More importantly, I had to make a conscious decision that I would make use my time wisely.

In conclusion, this "quarantine life" did impact me negatively. However, it also benefited me regarding school because it allowed me to strengthen my time management skills. Time management is essential in order to be successful in academics and in life. I believe the quote that William Penn once said which is "time is what we want most, but we use worst."
