Journalism - The Major of My Dreams by Mia - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Since the 9th grade, I knew I would have a future in writing. While I could have just chosen literature as my major, my love for community service led me to pursue journalism. Combined with my love for writing and passion for helping my local community, I found an infatuation for reporting.

While working for my school’s newspaper as a class and an extracurricular, I found my true passion for writing. Through connecting with my local community and researching topics that matter the most to me, the articles I have published encompass my significant opinions, interests, passions, and dreams.

By showcasing preexisting clubs, highlighting new establishments, interviewing students who shine amongst the rest, and reporting news that affects the surrounding area’s residents—working in a newspaper has taught me how to be a part of a greater community.

In my eyes, writing for a newspaper is an act of service to my community—it has led me to find the commune of my regional area by showcasing clubs, highlighting new establishments, interviewing students who shine amongst the rest, and reporting news that directly affects the people of the surrounding area—working in a newspaper has taught me how to be a part of a greater community. This newfound passion has broadened my horizons on my dream career and prospective future as a soon-to-be college student.

Journalism isn’t just meaningless writing; It’s the backbone of society. With my journalism degree, I have promised to use my knowledge to create trusted, quick, and discerning information for local community publications.

In my mind, I constantly repeat the words of American journalist Penny Abernathy: “It is hard to overstate the vitally important role that a strong newspaper can play in improving the quality of life for residents of the communities they serve. A good editor can see the big picture better than just about anyone else in the community—tying together the reality of the present with the possibility of the future.”
