Thinking Creatively in a School Environment by Mia - February 2023 Scholarship Essay
Soft skills are necessary in many areas of life, school or otherwise; they allow people in almost any field to communicate effectively with other people and balance their time and energy in useful, conducive ways for success. These skills include time management, leadership capability, teamwork and interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, etc. Soft skills factor into education as well, not just employment. Despite what many may think, the soft skill that I find has the biggest impact on the success of an education is that of creative thinking. The ability to think “outside the box” as some may say is deeply important for navigating educational life.
Of course, there are other soft skills that hold a great amount of importance in order to be successful educationally; being able to manage one’s time and communicate well with one’s peers is also deeply necessary. However, with the ability to think in a creative way almost guarantees success with other soft skills that one may not possess. Creative thinking can help a student come up with innovative questions to pose during class discussions, or perhaps figure out how to communicate with a teacher or professor in the most succinct, effective way. Overall, being able to think in an imaginative and original way can assist students in other areas that they may not have been proficient in previously.
Unfortunately, creative thinking is a skill that many people, especially those in the older generations, seem to lack. Oftentimes, it is left up to young people to come up with varied and innovative solutions to problems within an educational setting. The ability to be inventive and original, especially whilst under significant pressure, is the mark of someone who is destined for success, as such a skillset shows an increased affinity for the type of environment that the education system aims to prepare students for. Being able to think creatively is guaranteed to assist anyone in reaching success.
