Physical Education Revenge by Mia - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
I’ve never been good at sports, or fitness, or health, or anything along the lines of physical education (HOPE). Freshman year, when I took HOPE, my teacher was amazing when it came to her personality; however, her idea of fitness was not one I was able to accomplish. She made us do push-ups every week. Me, being incredibly unfit, couldn’t even do one, no matter how hard I tried. The problem with the class was that as the weeks progressed, the number of push-ups increased. We started the school year with 5, and ended with 50. Push-ups were the reason HOPE was torturous. Because of this, I feel It would be incredibly ironic, yet ridiculously funny, to be a physical education (HOPE) teacher.
Considering my teacher made me actually cry when I ran the mile, which was a requirement for her class, I find it fitting to ruin others’ lives by making them run a mile as well. This generation is technology-centered, therefore most children are no longer used to playing outside, only updating their twitter and Instagram posts. I can already imagine the looks on their faces when I make the assignment 100 points, which is what my teacher did. I know the saying goes “don’t do unto others what you don’t want done to you,” however I’m seeking revenge because I went through hell in that class, and I wasn’t others to experience my pain.
I know I’m cruel for choosing this profession if the roles were reversed, but at least I admit it. I have no shame in being the bad guy, because nice guys finish last. Obviously, I wouldn’t be completely awful. For those kids who struggle as much as I do when fitness is involved, I will offer extra credit to replace the agony of push-ups, and mile-long runs. There is a catch though: extra credit will be to watch movies in foreign languages and take a brief quiz on it, which again, was what my teacher did. I wouldn’t call it harsh… I too had to do it in class, and some movies turned out to be the greatest ones I’ve ever watched.
All in all, I find it fitting for me to become a physical education (HOPE) teacher to inflict my sufferings on other children, and get a laugh out of it. Though my teacher was harsh with her fitness, she was actually one of my favorites and I never regretted taking her class, and I think if I were to ever do the same, my students would love me and hate me all at the same time, and that truly is the goal.
