Breaking cuffs by Metab - July 2022 Scholarship Essay
Education is an expected right to the people of the free and a desired privilege to the oppressed. I hope that education becomes a norm for those who are unfortunate enough to seek it and gain the opportunity it provides to become successful in today's society.
In ten years I hope to see education more accessible to the less fortunate and a more enjoyable experience where it is a practiced law. School is a prison for many children who anticipate being bailed out of their four-year sentence.
Educational institutions need to break their prison bars in the next ten years and be more accessible to the different personalities and learning styles of students. Students are put under restricted rules that aren’t ideal in the real world and feel like they’re putting on an orange suit when they enter the school structured classroom. More options of experience should be introduced to young children to steer them in the right direction for their future careers. Even as grown adults many college students struggle to choose their major or decide what they want to do for the rest of their life because of not being exposed to it at an early age. Organizing classes specialized for specific careers instead of required courses can make young children eager to build an exciting environment.
The main change that needs to occur in education systems is providing more accessibility to mental health services. The lack of attention to mental health can shield the light of a bright student's potential. The present-day education system seems to be holding back a large amount of potential from young souls who grow to become uninterested in seeking knowledge. Teachers should be trained to notice signs of students who face abuse, trauma, and grief before it’s too late. Many students become a target of bullying after they open up about their emotions further pushing away the narrative of school being a safe space. Introducing new classes to learn about how to deal with trauma can be a progressive step in building a stronger connection with students as a guardian. Teachers can be a student's biggest role model which is why their significance to recognize those who might need more aid than others is vital.
Flexibility is essential in a learning environment and technology has played a big part in continually advancing and improving future education. I hope technology makes education more accessible to those who are disabled and gives them more opportunities to progress in the real world. High school students from low-income families often have to provide for their families which leads school to become less of a priority. Having flexible hours of school can be extremely beneficial to the students who can’t attend a normal eight-hour school day. Beginning to change the standard school day will be the biggest help in furthering the success of education in the coming years. Building up organizations and raising awareness among those wanting to seek knowledge from hospital beds and prison cells is what can make education thrive. Focusing the twelve years children are required to go to school on careers they are passionate about can be the key to unlocking the cuffs that students have been put in.
All and all, increasing flexibility and accessibility should be the number one priority in changing education in the next ten years. In ten years I hope students become more diligent in their efforts in education and begin seeking it out on their own, without being forced to. In ten years I hope to see schools unlocking the cuffs and breaking the prison bars, allowing children to express their freedom of learning.
