Hope by Merissa - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
Hope is the one thing that kept me going when my mother sat me down at fifteen and told me that my father had become terminally ill. The doctors at that time had given him at the most just three years to live. I had hope that he would get better, hope that I would be able to spend years with him, that he would be able to see me graduate high school and see me go off to college.
Throughout the next few years my life changed dramatically, I spent most my free time in hospitals with my father where we were constantly surrounded by nurses and other clinical staff who made a lasting impression on me. The nurses not only were helping my father, but they were there for my family and I as well. It was at that point that point I decided to devote my life to helping others. I want to devote my life to helping others the way I watched those nurses help my father and my family through those difficult times. They gave my family and I hope.
Attending college for me is more than just bettering my life its about making other people’s lives better. I want to be the one to give other people hope. I am currently enrolled in Pomeroy College of Nursing at Crouse Hospital, where I plan on graduating with a degree in Nursing giving me the ability to give hope to everyone I come across, saving and changing lives for the better. Unfortunately, my father passed away February 23, 2016 before he could see me get accepted into nursing school, but I am so excited to continue my education and help so many people while bringing hope to the world with my degree.
