Discovery by Meredith - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Discover. Discover can mean a lot of things. By definition it is to "find (something or someone) unexpectedly or in the course of a search" or to "become aware of (a fact or situation)". I think this is fitting for my desire to go to college because I feel there is so much left for me to discover. High school has been awesome, and I’ve learned a great deal of things; however, once I move out on my own, I have no doubt that I will learn abundantly more.

I’ve always had a passion for education and for learning pretty much anything, and I’ve also had a strong sense of adventure. I think when you add those things together, you end up with discoveries. Discovery encompasses my love for both adventure and knowledge. I love being given a topic and searching and learning about it. Marcel Proust once said “We don't receive wisdom we must discover it for ourselves.” I strongly agree with this quote. It is our own job to take advantage of our opportunities at college.

I believe college will teach me so many new, cutting-edge things that I've never known were real and bring me closer to more things that push the edge of possibility. I want to discover fresh knowledge. I want to learn more, do more, see more. I desire to be put in environments where I can learn things but can also make rich discoveries during the process. I desire to be surprised and to come across the unexpected. I wish to unearth new things that will shape who I am and how I live my life. I wish to discover new things about myself, weaknesses and strengths, and to work on them. I want to discover the natural and even the supernatural. I want to discover the world, and I firmly believe college will set me up with the right foundation to do just that.
