Positivity Within my School by Menka - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

If I could change my school in a positive way, I would have a few things in mind. First of all, I would make sure to implement a friendship system for new incoming students who are unfamiliar with the school. This is because I was a transfer student from a Canadian school, moving to a United States public school, extremely unfamiliar with my surroundings. Even though I eventually accomplished friendships and comfortability, it took a while, and I felt as if I was alone and navigating friendships on my own. If I could, I would make an organization where involved students within the school would talk to the newer incoming students to give them an idea about what to expect within our school and what it has to offer and introduce them to others within their grade and interest level. I believe this would have a positive impact because many students around the school feel alone and do not know who to talk to. With the help of a specific program in place, students would be able to meet new people and hear about information through a school-implemented system.

Second, I would make sure there would be a better recycling program put in place. I would make sure that each and every classroom has a recycling bin that is encouraged to be used. Along with that, I believe that there should be groups of people in an environmental team that would go around the school and collect garbage and recycling once a week to clean up our school and also make it more eco-friendly. Many schools underestimate the impact that a small building can have, but one at a time helps the environment in any way possible. This would have a positive impact on our school because it makes the school a cleaner place for kids to be part of and makes us feel better about our role in our environment.

Lastly I would implement positivity assemblies once a month. This would include getting each grade to have their own assembly, and participate in pep rallies and games within the field one day out of every month to get the students excited to be at school. This would include skill building games such as communication and leadership games as well as speakers from different grade levels to talk about their experiences. This would benefit the school, because not only would it be a fun and exciting thing for each grade level to look forward to but it would teach and strengthen certain skills.
