The Importance of Physical Health Education by Melody - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

Students tend to misunderstand the purpose of Physical Education (P.E.), excluding this class as another learning opportunity in school/education. Students fail to see past the fact that to achieve success and high records in P.E. requires great physical ability, undermining the requirement of great mental capability. The ability to overcome challenges physically is one thing, but to overcome physical challenges mentally is the purpose of Physical Education. This class lacks emphasis in its importance to a student's education, as it's just another course filled with many things to learn, but under different conditions, that will only help students widen their minds to more knowledge, along with new skillsets and capabilities.

In P.E., creating and accomplishing goals needs to be heavily emphasized. It's no wonder students never put in full effort into the mile run when all they hear is that their state merely requires student scores for data. Where's the emphasis in goal setting? In goal getting? This goes for all fitness tests students are required to do. Fitness tests are especially important for the development and use of mental strength and capability of an individual because they're required to overcome physical challenges on their own, utilizing the power of mentality. Not only can then students learn to maximize their mental capabilities, but they learn how to build confidence within themselves and strive to achieve goals. If an individual can achieve and learn this much, this creates a class environment, in which all students can learn from peers.

Teamwork lacks emphasis during sports units in P.E. Although a simple term with a simple understanding, students can know what it means, but lack the ability to apply it. The ability to work and collaborate with others in physically and mentally challenging competitions is of greater importance and skill than individual work. Teamwork requires a great leader followed by great teammates, effective communication, constant support and morale, and the ability to analyze and work around the team's individual strengths and weaknesses to adjust and be more versatile. However simple teamwork might be, there's much more to it than being kind to one another, learning how to work together, listening to each other, talking to each other because more critical thinking and collaborating should be involved.

These skillsets that P.E. should require and emphasize make this class significant to a student's learning. It provides a unique, more fun and active learning opportunity and style that involves problem-solving through physical and mental strength, different from solving math problems, reading novels, analyzing sources, and performing experiments. P.E. emphasizes the importance of goal setting and goal getting, mental capability in overcoming physically challenging obstacles, and effective teamwork, in which these skillsets can be applied in the real world without a doubt.
