Reversing Roles With a Teacher by Mellissa - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I had to reverse roles with a teacher from my school, I would choose to teach history. Why history? Because learning from our past greatly affects our ability to learn and grow into the future. Many students don’t understand exactly how important history class is. Sayings like “Learn from your mistakes” or “history repeats itself” can be very relevant at times, but if you’re not aware of what happened in the past, can mean nothing.
If I was a high school, or even college, history teacher, I would use new and exciting ways to allow students to be engaged in learning about history. Whether it is our country, state or culture’s history, it is still very important to learn about. As a history teacher, I would try to get rid of the history class stereotypes like; memorizing dates, watching boring documentaries, constantly reading from text books, etc. I would create activities that allow students to become more involved in what they are learning about, such as; reenacting famous scenes from history, using teamwork to create pieces of art that tells a story from the past, and other interactive activities.
If I had to change roles with a teacher from my school, I would definitely want it to be a history teacher.
