Our Dying Earth by Melizza - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed and I had to chose a subject to teach, it would be Environmental Science with an emphasis on how pollution is affecting the Earth and us humans. It's important to teach young people the importance of helping the Earth and ourselves not die.
Taking a conservation class last summer, I learned the inevitable truth, we are doomed. I was so angry with society and hated humans and myself for so long. Why would we harm the ocean by over-exploiting it, polluting it, and over acidifying it? We are only harming ourselves. The ocean and its many ecosystems provide a buffer for us when when hurricanes and storms hit. Along with that they provide food, and many exciting activities. We would not be able to live/ survive without the Earth and its oceans. So, why are killing the thing that's keeping us alive? That is the reason I hated society, for our ignorance and selfishness, myself included.
We started the conservation class by talking about all the bad things that are happening, I cried a few times. But then we moved onto talking about the good things that conversationalists have done, and that made me feel a bit better.
I could take this anger and passion and be able to teach this class because I know myself. I can move people with the sound of my voice when I talk about something i'm passionate about because I was in choir and learned how to do this. The Earth has done noting but provide and we've done nothing but destroy.
