Why I Want To Be A Mortician by Melissa - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

For the longest time, I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life. I had some form of a general idea, and that was that I wanted to help people. I jumped around from idea to idea, but the main goal of helping people had always stuck. I had not really thought about what I wanted to do, but the overarching and looming fact that I was graduating this year finally hit me. I sat down with a notebook and my laptop and searched for a career on multiple college websites. None of them really seemed interesting. That was before I got to Wayne States website. I looked through the degrees and landed on Mortuary Science. I had no idea what it was and I thought it looked intriguing, so I searched for what it actually was.
As someone who has delt with loss throughout my entire early years, I thought about the one person who I had lost that had impacted me the most. My mom had passed in 2017, and looking back on it now, remembering how beautiful her service was, and all the effort that the funeral directors had put into it had made me realize that this was the major I wanted to go into. I wanted to help give people the closure that they need, a chance to see their loved one for the last time and say their final goodbye. I had not really considered that an option for a career up until that point. But thinking back on it now, I feel like my entire life had been pushing me to go into this field.
