Airline Pilot by Melissa - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
Being a women in any industry is not an easy thing to do, NO MATTER what anybody tells you.
It was not until my sophomore year of high school, I then realized that I wanted to be an airline pilot. It was not for the traveling aspect, although that is a lovely part of it, but because you get to experience the world from 40,000 feet up in the air. The funny part about being a pilot is when you meet your co-pilot five minutes ago and now you are cramped in a small space for hours with them. But we as pilots, do it because we love our job.
I can proudly announce that I got accepted and WILL be attending my top choice, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. I will be majoring in Aeronautical Science with flight. Riddle allows me to fly three times a week so that I can gain the experience in the cockpit and start adding up my flight hours. Best part is because I’ll be a Riddle alumni, I can walk into an airline company with a minimum of 1,000 flight hours unlike anybody else who would need a minimum of 1,500 hours.
Going to the college of my dreams will be tough. Not just financially, just academically. Four years of hard work will definitely pay off in the end. My first year at Riddle, I WILL get my private license. Which is only the start of my pilots career. My goal is to gain as many hours as I can at Riddle and learn from the best instructors around so that I can be the best female pilot there is to be. Receiving an Aeronautical Science allows me understand the instruments and interior design of an aircraft to allow me to fly with ease and the safety of daily passengers. The classes I will be taking are heavy in science. But because I strive to be an airline pilot, I plan on doing every assignment I can with 100% effort. Or better yet, like my soccer coach always said, “I need 110% out of you!”
