Career Discovery 1- Syllabus by Meghan - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Good morning class and welcome to Career Discovery 1.
My name is Professor Green and I am extremely excited to be teaching this class for the first time and I know we are going to have a great quarter. A little about myself, when I am not teaching this class I attended the University of California Davis where I have finally decided to pursue a degree in Environmental Science. This was not an easy decision for me. It was not what my family had hoped I would go into and I must admit not what I had planned for myself. There were days of fear, doubt, and stress. However, my passion for animals and nature could not be denied, even by the prospect of poor wage. Now that I have chosen my field, I have run into another roadblock, what career do I pick in the field? What kinds of jobs are out there anyways? At Davis there are many different fields of study and many different Professors to ask, but they are scattered about and finding who to talk to seems impossible. When I approached my counselor I only got the few careers that are common knowledge, but I wanted to know about all the other little jobs that are out there. I asked peers if they knew what they wanted to do and I would always get the same answer, no. Even friends I knew that were graduating did not have a sure plan as to what they were going to become. I personally would have loved the opportunity that you all have in taking this class.
In this class, we will get to go out in the real world and spend a day in the lives of multiple professional people with careers such as chef, veterinarian, athlete, writer, actress, landscape architect and so forth. There is no better way to find out if you want to do something, possibly for the rest of your life, than jumping right in and experiencing it for yourself. After getting to experience just one of the jobs in that field, I will also be giving out possible other careers in the same field and give you names and contact information for some people who would love to share more on these other opportunities. I want to make sure that all the information you need is in one place.
I feel like today’s college students can be so overwhelmed by the daunting task of deciding what they want to do. Coming from experience, I want to make this class as helpful as I possibly can. With this class I really just want to help you all find some peace of mind. It is my hope that everyone will at least walk away knowing the field of study they would like to go into and possible jobs out there. I want this class to be enjoyable, I know how hard some of the classes you are taking can be. This will not be one of those. We will not have graded assignments, only participation. We are going to have a great time while also setting up your foundation for the rest of your time in college.
So let’s get this class started shall we. I hope no one is afraid of snakes. Welcome Dan Shields, zookeeper at……
