My Parents by Megan - September 2013 Scholarship Essay
There are many people in my family who went to college and many who didn't, but the people who stick out in my mind as academic role models would have to be my parents. Both of my parents came from large families: my mother was child number five out of six and my father child number five out of eight. Because of the large number of children, my grandparents couldn't pay for their college education. My mother worked summers to pay for her classes. My father waited one year to go to college in order to save up enough money to pay for everything.
Once my parents met and married, rather than quitting college to start a family, they decided to move out of state so that my father could continue his academics and have a successful career later on. Even though it was financially tough, they managed to pay for college as well as everyday necessities.
Without question, my parents are my academic role models due to their eagerness to learn and, even in hardship, ability to create a bright future for themselves by not giving up. Being a twin, I realize it will be difficult for them to pay for both my and my sister's education at the same time; thus, I hope to follow their example by working hard to pay for all my college expenses and to one day raise a family and have a successful career.
