My Future After Duquesne University by Megan - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

Ever since sophomore year biology class, the subject of biochemistry has fascinated me. This class was my introduction to the niche study amongst all the facets of biology, and it had the greatest impact on me by far. I enjoyed studying processes such as photosynthesis and DNA replication to such a degree that I would sketch and color code diagrams of these functions just to understand them more fully. Connecting the beautiful intricacies of these cycles was an activity I truly enjoyed, and it led me to consider pursuing the subject further.
In addition to my pure fascination with biochemistry, this academic pathway combines many of my core values that I seek in a college education and career: helping others, making new discoveries, and challenging myself. I have always wanted a career in which I can help others. This vision began in the first grade when I wanted to be a teacher because I loved helping my classmates with their math homework. However, these initial roots grew into a love for service that I fulfilled in high school through volunteering at organizations such as the Special Olympics, my local resource pantry, and a charity that collects handmade crocheted goods. In college, I want to study and research malfunctions in biochemical processes that lead to health issues with the intention of discovering ways to solve these problems in order to help others. I have also always been naturally curious, and the idea of researching and making new discoveries each day is thrilling to me. It is this curiosity that emboldens me to not fear the challenge of such an academic focus. I need the challenge that biochemical research will give me as it progresses and changes each day, finding new problems as old ones are solved. Though there are many difficulties that come with such a complicated field of study and research, I have always loved challenging myself and would rather be confused by this dynamic study than bored in another profession.
I am grateful that this dream will be fulfilled at Duquesne University, which presents opportunities like no other to challenge myself and make a difference. As a renowned research institution, Duquesne is the ideal place for me to build a foundation of research and knowledge, as well as a springboard to find employment in the area as a pharmacologist. Duquesne’s network of successful, experienced professors will not only help me learn more about the topics that I am passionate about, but also guide me to engage in hands-on work and build professional connections within Pittsburgh. I am excited to pursue this dream, and am grateful that Duquesne University will be my home to do so.
