Learning Experiences That Have Surrounded Me by Megan - November 2022 Scholarship Essay
I am a life-long learner who wants to be a contributing member of a school community. Learning about myself, the world around me and my place in that world makes my life rich and fulfilling. I want to share that growth journey with others in order to make a positive contribution, and a formal education is a big part of that.
Lifelong learning is a process that only ends when I end. It is one of discovery and subsequent joy in understanding. I see this in my parents, but, until high school, I never fully realized how this part of them became a part of me. Both of my parents are teachers, and they populated my childhood with many experiences that brought curiosity and wonder to their faces. My elementary school teacher mom would always try out science experiments for kindergarteners, and my sisters and I would be spellbound as she narrated through her “lava lamp experiment”. My high school teacher dad would take us on kayak trips up the Batsto River, describing, along the way, how pirates would use the river to steal British shipping during the Revolutionary War. When they included us in their passion for learning, the world had more color and sound. It had more depth. It had more clarity.
I don’t want that to every end, and I want to share my path of discovery with others to make this world a better one. I think college is the best path for me to achieve that goal.
