Education Made Me by Megan - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
Education has helped shape me into who I am today, and I am quite proud of it. Many people realize that education is a necessary means of life, although many people overlook the importance of education. Education is seen as a stepping stone. People go to school, learn the basics, and figure out what they want to expand on, study it and land a career. Although my main goal is to get a career as a nurse and have a source of income to support my family, I know that is not the only thing I will have gained through my educational experience.
One thing that I am grateful for is the determination that my education has given me. I have always strived to my best. I have always been determined to get the very best grade possible. This determination does not only apply in my school life. I have learned to use this determination in sports I have participated in, as well as at my job. No matter what I am doing, when I am handed a task I am determined to do my very best.
A second way that education has shaped me is making me a punctual person. All levels of my education have required me to be at school by a certain time, in class early so I am prepared as soon as my professors is ready to begin. Being punctual is an important part of life. In life people are constantly meeting friends at a particular time, going to appointments, and work. A person will not do well in a job, class or with friends if they are constantly being late. I find punctuality to be important and I am glad that I was able to gain this skill through my education.
A final thing that I was able to gain from my education was self-reliance. I did not always do well in school. I was caught in the middle I was not a student who needed extra help, nor was I one of the gifted students. However when I was placed in the advanced classes, I had to work extremely hard. I was not able to sit through class, master the material and never look at it again till the night before a test. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. I slowly learned that I needed to study, take my time and really learn the material. Learning this material I had to be self-reliant. I could not rely on my teachers; I had to rely on myself. This is also applicable in my life for when the grass needs mowed, dished need done and something may need fixed. Through this I learned that I cannot always rely on someone, and I learned to take care of things for myself.
I am nowhere done my educational experience, but I am glad what I have gotten out of it so far. Not only have I learned what I need to for exams and do well in my classes, I have also learned to be a determined, punctual and self-reliant person. Without education I would not be the person I am today. I would not have all of these great qualities if it were not for the great education that I have received.
