Better Bay City by Megan - May 2019 Scholarship Essay
As most citizens in the United States, I am very proud of my hometown. I love the atmosphere and how welcoming Bay City is to all walks of life. However, that doesn’t mean that there is not room for improvement. In Bay City we have access to the saginaw river. I think that this a spot filled with untapped potential. If I were to get a $10,000 grant I would spend that money on making the river a more favorable visitor location.
I think that if Bay City were to add more permanent activities near the water then they would see an increase in visitors to our great city. An example of this would be putting more family friendly businesses near the water. It could also be beneficial to add special spots or seating along the river for people to come and fish. With the placement of outdoor games or a place where you could rent different games or outdoor adventure equipment I think that there could be a potential to not only get the citizens out and about, but it could also bring in people from outside the area. If I were to get a $10,000 grant I would consider all these options as a potential way to spend that money.
I think out of all those options I would choose to have a business put in by the water that would allow its customers to rent equipment for outdoor activities and games. Some of the things that could be offered there would include canoes, corn hole, and rentable bikes. Now this project would obviously need to have more funding than just the $10,000, however if this idea was pitched to the community I am certain that citizens and businesses in the area would donate towards the cause. The rentable products would be offered at a small daily rate and would require the people to sign some type of form and a copy of their ID. This would not only have a social impact, but also an economic one as well.
This idea would benefit our city socially, as it would bring people out of their homes and into a more central location. This would greater the amount of interaction that our citizens would have and create a better and bigger sense of community here in our area. There is also an economic benefit to this idea. I believe that people would come to Bay City from surrounding areas to rent equipment and have fun in the area. This would not only give money to the rental business, but it also would inevitably bring in business to other business throughout Bay City. I think this idea will benefit the city by making people happier and make the local businesses bloom.
There are so many ways that $10,000 can go towards bettering my community. However, I think that adding to the activities that locals and visitors could take part in will boost the morale and improve my hometown. This would be a positive addition to the community. It would encourage a better sense of community and also greatly impact the economy here in Bay City. The area is already an amazing place to live, but with this grant money and new addition it is sure to become an even better place.
